How It Works

The Benefits of Home Extensions

A home extension is a relatively cost-effective way to add more living space to your home, meaning you can stay in the home that you love, in the location you desire, instead of having to move.

Home extensions are a great way to cater for a growing family’s needs, they can create extra guest space, provide a working from home option or even offer space for your own home gym or cinema!

As we have always said, “Why move, when you can improve?” The experience of a house move is often stressful, very costly and occasionally ends in disappointment if your sale falls through. By extending your existing home, you will avoid all that stress and as well as creating a larger home, you will also be increasing your profit, as home extensions add value. Research conducted by Nationwide on the value of improvements to an average three bedroom house found that an extension can add up to 23% to the value of your property.

Single-Storey Extensions

If you are looking to add a new room to their home then single-storey extensions could be your best option, as they can often be carried out under permitted development, if built within three meters. This means you can avoid the lengthy wait for planning permission and get the extra space you desire sooner rather than later!

However, it is important to note that single storey extensions may still require a party wall agreement with your adjoining or nearby neighbour to ensure that all parties are protected during the build process. This is a relatively simply process but must be completed before the build begins.

Side Return Extensions

Do you want to keep your garden space but still crave more internal space? If so, a side return extension could be just what you are looking for. Side return extensions are one of the most common residential build projects as they offer a great way to increase the footprint of terraced houses and semi-detached homes, without encroaching on the outdoor living space. If you have a dark side alley way that lays redundant, why not transform it into a walk in pantry or utility, maybe even a downstairs bathroom to future proof your property!

Another advantage of a side return extension is the ability to add in roof glazing which brings natural light into a space, transforming a small, dark room into a light bright area, as well as adding the width required to create an open plan kitchen, if desired.

Double Storey Extensions

A double storey house extension gives you double the living space of a single storey, but the cost of the foundations and the roof are more or less the same for both build types, meaning the money you spend per metre square is less with a double storey build.

So, if you are you are thinking about moving to meet the needs of your growing family but really love the house you are in, then a double storey extension is a great way to maximise space and keep up with your family’s needs.

HICL have plenty of experience in bringing your design ideas to life and creating the home that you have always wanted, without having to relocate! Most double storey extensions will require planning permission and a well-qualified architect, who is familiar with the demands of your local authority, should be able to achieve this without upsetting your neighbours.

So, what are you waiting for? Give HICL a call today and let us bring your vision to life.

Loft Conversion

A loft conversion will be a quicker solution to adding extra space to your home, as it is repurposing an existing space, as opposed to building something completely new. There are different types of loft extension that are available to home owners and if will depend on your property type as to which one is most suitable.

Loft conversions provide valuable extra space that can be used as an extra bedroom, master en suite, games room, home office and more. Your loft extensions can be fitted with electric points, lighting, a bathroom, new windows, doors, woodwork and skirting. In order to comply with fire safety it is required to fit all new fire doors throughout the house, or if you do not wish to do this, a fire door is supplied by HICL for the new loft room and smoke alarms can then be installed on each floor as an alternative to fire doors throughout.
