Case Study: External Wall Insulation Retrofit, 1930s Semi-Detached Home, Twickenham SW London
22 July 2025

Client Brief:

The owners of this 1930s semi-detached home in Twickenham were looking for a long-term solution to address ongoing heat loss, draughts, and high energy bills. The property had solid brick walls with no insulation and a tired external appearance. They wanted to improve thermal efficiency, reduce heating costs, and refresh the external façade without losing any internal space.

Our Solution:

Following a detailed survey, the team at Home Improvements & Construction Ltd recommended a full external wall insulation (EWI) system. We specified 100mm expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation boards, which offer excellent thermal performance for solid wall properties. A breathable silicone render in a soft white finish was applied to complete the system.

To ensure a smooth and visually appealing result, we also carried out minor remedial work to the guttering and around the window reveals. All necessary building control paperwork was managed by our in-house team. We maintained close communication with neighbours to ensure scaffold access and minimal disruption throughout the project.

Outcome:
The external wall insulation significantly improved the home's energy performance. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating was upgraded from D to B. The homeowners noticed a 30 percent reduction in heating bills within the first few months. Internally, the house became noticeably warmer and more comfortable, particularly in previously cold areas.

The new render finish gave the home a crisp, modern look while remaining low-maintenance and weather-resistant. The entire project was completed within three weeks and met both the client’s budget and design expectations.

Client Feedback:
“We are extremely happy with the outcome. The house is noticeably warmer and quieter, and the exterior looks fantastic. HICL managed the whole process professionally and kept us informed at every stage. We would definitely recommend their external wall insulation service in Twickenham.”

We are pleased that this successful external wall insulation project demonstrates how Home Improvements & Construction Ltd helps homeowners improve comfort, energy efficiency, and kerb appeal.
